Treasure of China
Traditional Chinese medicine in China is an ancient existence, but also a realistic existence.
In early 2020, an COVID-19 epidemic swept the world. The epidemic was so fierce that it was caught off guard. No vaccine! There is no specific medicine! People’s lives are once again facing great threats. Like every major epidemic in history, Chinese medicine once again went to the front line to fight the epidemic. New use of ancient prescriptions, treatment based on syndrome differentiation, "Qingfei Paidu Decoction" and other prescriptions based on the ancient prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine recorded in Treatise on Febrile Diseases and other ancient books have shown their unique advantages in reducing mortality and improving cure rate. China traditional Chinese medicine has once again shown its tenacious vitality in the face of world epidemics, which has greatly protected the health and even life of China people.
How many large-scale epidemics have occurred in the history of China? It has been recorded for more than 300 times in history. Many classics of traditional Chinese medicine, such as Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Treatise on Epidemic Febrile Diseases, were formed after the great epidemic, which recorded the rich experience of the Chinese nation in fighting epidemic diseases. As an original system of medical knowledge, theory, methods and skills, which has undergone thousands of years, hundreds of millions of people’s life practice test and historical inheritance and development, and is obviously different from western modern medicine, Chinese medicine reflects the Chinese nation’s understanding of nature, life, health and disease, and is a unique and advantageous health, economy, science and technology, culture and ecological resource of the Chinese nation, which has made great contributions to the prosperity of the Chinese nation and the continuation of Chinese civilization. The ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine, which contain such rich and valuable original thinking, unique theory and practical experience, not only have important literature value, cultural value and cultural value, but also have very precious clinical value, which is an important feature that distinguishes ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine from other ancient books. These documents are an important carrier for the inheritance of Chinese medicine academic and original thinking for thousands of years, an important support for self-confidence and self-reliance of Chinese medicine, and the source, confidence and confidence of the inheritance, innovation and development of Chinese medicine. Tu Youyou, a researcher, found the inspiration for discovering artemisinin from Elbow Emergency Recipe, which saved millions of lives around the world. Effective prescriptions such as "three drugs and three parties" that stand out in China’s fight against the COVID-19 epidemic,It is also edited from the classic names in Chinese medical classics. Ancient Chinese medicine books, such as flowing water from the source, irrigate the practical flowers of inheriting the essence of Chinese medicine and keeping the integrity and innovation.
The earliest existing medical masterpiece Huangdi Neijing in China can be traced back to more than 2,000 years ago. This shows that the history of Chinese medicine has a long history. Not only that, but the rich collection of Chinese medicine classics is also rare in the world. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, China has conducted a general survey of ancient Chinese medicine books for three times, and initially found out the background of ancient Chinese medicine books: there are nearly 9,000 kinds of ancient Chinese medicine books in the world, which is a figure that makes the Chinese nation proud. There are 371 ancient Chinese medicine books included in the National List of Precious Ancient Books (the first to sixth batches).
In today’s world, Chinese medicine is a cultural symbol with world influence. As the carrier of recording Chinese traditional medical theory and diagnosis and treatment experience, ancient Chinese medicine books have been "going abroad" and become a beautiful scenery in the history of Sino-foreign exchanges. Especially in the circle of Chinese language and culture, such as Korea and Japan, the influence of ancient Chinese medicine books is more extensive. According to research data, there are more than 980 kinds of China medical books spread to Japan during the Edo period alone. Three ancient Chinese medicine books, such as Compendium of Materia Medica, Huangdi Neijing and Four Medical Codes, have been selected into the Memory of the World.
The will of the country
The party and the state attach great importance to the exploration, collation, protection and utilization of traditional Chinese medicine.
At the beginning of the founding of New China, Comrade Mao Zedong pointed out: "China medicine is a great treasure house, which should be explored and improved."
From the second half of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, China continued to carry out the general survey, collation and research of ancient Chinese medicine books. The government organized a large-scale collation of ancient Chinese medicine books for three times, and a number of ancient Chinese medicine books such as Su Wen, Ling Shu and Acupuncture A-B Classic were collated, studied, interpreted and published. In 1954, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China put forward "Collating and publishing TCM books: publishing TCM books, including collating, editing and reprinting classical and modern medical books" for the first time in his report on improving TCM work. Later, "collating and annotating the classics of traditional Chinese medicine" was first included in the national "1963— Outline of the 1972 Science and Technology Development Plan. In the implementation of the national plan for the collation and publication of ancient books (1982— In 1990), more than 200 kinds of ancient Chinese medicine books have been sorted out and studied, and a number of classic Chinese medicine books have been published. In 2005, the Ministry of Finance set up a special fund to implement the "Rescue Project of Ancient Chinese Medicine Books", and 165 kinds of rare documents were collected for photocopying and publishing, which became an outstanding representative of the "rare book reconstruction" of ancient Chinese medicine books.
2010 is an extraordinary year for the cause of ancient Chinese medicine books. This year, when attending the awarding ceremony of the Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, the then Vice President of the State pointed out: "Traditional Chinese medicine embodies profound philosophical wisdom, the Chinese nation’s concept of health preservation for thousands of years and its practical experience, which is the treasure of ancient science in China and the key to opening the treasure house of Chinese civilization. In-depth study and scientific summary of traditional Chinese medicine are of positive significance for enriching the world medical cause and promoting life science research. " In the same year, the Ministry of Finance invested 40 million yuan to support the implementation of the "Capacity Building Project for the Protection and Utilization of Ancient Chinese Medicine Books" in state administration of traditional chinese medicine. Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine led nine units across the country to collate more than 400 kinds of precious medical books, and the results were merged into the "China Ancient Medical Books Collation Series". In the same year, the proposal of compiling Chinese Medical Collection put forward by the research group of Chinese medicine in China Academy of Social Sciences was highly valued by the central leadership. For this reason, since 2010, the National Library (National Ancient Books Protection Center) and the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Information of Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (National Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Ancient Books Protection Center) have carried out a nationwide survey of ancient Chinese medicine books, organized national experts and scholars to carry out research, and on the basis of further clarifying the current situation of ancient Chinese medicine books, initially formed the selection of Chinese Medical Collection.
Everything is ready and ready to go.
Many things happen. In 2018, "Chinese Medical Collection" was solemnly established. The Ministry of Finance officially listed it in the "Chinese Ancient Books Protection Plan" for funding. In 2019, people saw that "excavating and inheriting the essence in the treasure house of traditional Chinese medicine, strengthening the research and utilization of ancient books and compiling" Chinese Medical Collection "was written into" Opinions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on Promoting the Inheritance, Innovation and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine ". In 2022, in the Opinions on Promoting the Work of Ancient Books in the New Era issued by the General Offices of the General Office of the Central Committee of the CPC and the State Council, it was clearly written that "combing and excavating the essence of classical medical books, promoting the inheritance, innovation and development of traditional Chinese medicine, and improving people’s health and well-being", and the task and goal were striking and firm.
A scholar’s long-cherished wish
It is the long-cherished wish of several generations of scholars in China to get rid of the rough and extract the essence, discard the false and retain the true, and extract the Yuan Dian and essence of ancient Chinese medicine books into one compilation.
According to the bibliographic description, there are nearly 9,000 kinds of ancient Chinese medicine books printed before 1912 in 150 libraries (museums) in China, of which about 3,000 kinds are isolated books, accounting for more than 40% of the total existing ancient Chinese medicine books, including fine-grained books, manuscripts of famous doctors, school-based manuscripts approved by famous scholars, fine-grained books, engraved manuscripts, sketches of painted books, circulations, guide charts and so on. In addition to the orphan medical books, there are only 2-mdash in China; Three rare medical books, there are about 1100 kinds of such books. The total number of the above two kinds of books is more than 4,800, accounting for more than half of the total number of ancient Chinese medicine books. The ancient Chinese medicine books that have survived the vicissitudes of time are precious. The protection, arrangement and utilization of them are always in the hearts of Chinese scholars.
In 2006, Mr. Ren Jiyu, a famous scholar, said in response to the proposal of Mr. Fang Keli, a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, to compile Chinese Medical Collection: "This matter will be done sooner or later, but it is different from the general ancient book sorting project, and it needs a group of experts who know Chinese medicine and the history of Chinese medicine to participate in it, so as to get the essence from the rough and discard the false and retain the true, and then it can be said to be scientifically sorted. There are not many people who can do this now, and the relevant competent departments should be reminded to include this project in the national major cultural construction project as soon as possible. " However, before detailed research, I let the old man drive the crane west. At the end of 2009, at the "theoretical seminar on promoting Chinese culture and promoting the development of Chinese medicine" held by the National Research Group of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mr. Fang clearly proposed "promoting this project to be included in the national major cultural construction project as soon as possible".
Scholars in the field of traditional Chinese medicine have never stopped their efforts to make a mickle out of an armpit for Chinese Medical Collection. In 2016, The Series of Rare Books of Overseas Chinese Medicine (all 403 volumes) was published by Zhonghua Book Company. This is a concentrated display of many years’ work achievements of famous Chinese scholars Zheng Jinsheng, Zhang Zhibin, Zhen Liucheng and other Chinese and foreign scholars who have devoted their lives to the research and collation of TCM literature and the excavation and return of overseas TCM ancient books. Since the 20th century, scholars have gone deep into countries all over the world to conduct literature surveys and copied and returned to a large number of ancient medical books scattered overseas. The series contains 427 kinds of rare ancient Chinese medicine books (about 220,000 pages) scattered overseas, including 8 Song editions, 11 Yuan editions, 214 Ming editions, 40 Qing editions, 7 modern manuscripts, 18 He editions, 113 Japanese manuscripts and 16 Korean editions. According to rough statistics, there are more than 160 kinds of ancient medical books lost in China and more than 280 kinds of rare versions lost. This set of books has a wide range of categories, complete contents and rare editions, and has extremely high edition value and literature value.
Xue Qinglu, a senior scholar, a famous Chinese medicine bibliographer and former director of the Institute of Library and Information Science of China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has been boating on the sea of ancient Chinese medicine books for decades and edited the General Catalogue of Ancient Chinese Medicine Books in China. In the preface of the second edition, she wrote: "The collection of catalogues of Chinese medicine books from the three major system libraries in China has been going on intermittently for seven years. By the end of 1985, more than 100,000 catalogues of Chinese medicine books were received from 113 libraries in China. After verification, sorting and induction, 12,124 kinds of books (including Chinese medicine classics from 1912 to 1949) were finally included. " "In the process of compiling, the original materials provided by the libraries were carefully investigated and verified. Over the past few years, more than 7,500 letters were sent out, and the recovery rate reached about 90%. The relevant units have made serious answers to the questions raised. In addition, the writing team has sent more than 500 people to conduct on-the-spot investigation and verification, striving to record accurately, classify properly and reduce mistakes. " In a few words, the backward technical means of cataloging work, the complicated workflow and the hardships of practical personnel were revealed.
"Chinese Medical Collection" is a major national cultural project, a basic academic masterpiece for the inheritance, innovation and development of traditional Chinese medicine, and an important embodiment of the revision of the canon in the prosperous times. The "collection" of Chinese Medical Collection is the "collection" of ancient medical books in China, which is not only a systematic collection and photocopying of ancient Chinese medicine documents, but also a rigorous academic research and system innovation; It is not only a collection, classification and compilation of important classical medical books, but also a systematic review of the academic development history of traditional Chinese medicine, and a collection of the latest achievements in systematic research and collation of medical literature handed down from ancient times.
For the early publication of "Chinese Medical Collection", a generation of scholars from many industries and nationalities devoted themselves wholeheartedly to this important basic academic project, which is of great significance and tries to fully reveal the development of traditional Chinese medicine. Many of them traveled all over the country, searching for rare books and rare books, and took pains. Many experts from all walks of life, regardless of the age and complexity, are hands-on and make suggestions for the implementation of the project. With their abundant theoretical knowledge and rich practical experience, experts of all kinds of projects have provided a guarantee for the Chinese Medical Collection to become a boutique.
The Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has more than 100,000 precious Chinese ancient books, is duty-bound to shoulder the mission of inheriting, developing and making good use of the treasure house of ancient Chinese medicine, and to condense and contribute new resources and strength in the inheritance and development, protection and utilization, excavation and innovation of ancient Chinese medicine. Its Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Information has overcome many difficulties, and together with Zhejiang Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Inner Mongolia Medical University, it has taken the lead in completing the compilation of "Health Preservation Volume".
Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Information have organized many trainings for talents of ancient Chinese medicine books, invited famous experts from all over the country to give lectures, and old experts and young scholars exchanged ideas and absorbed more young scholars to participate in the project, which provided a solid talent guarantee for the smooth implementation of the work of ancient Chinese medicine books.
Under the circumstance that the funds need to be raised by itself, the National Library Press has resolutely joined in, set up a special editing room, and sent elite soldiers to take on the historical responsibility of escorting the high-quality publication of Chinese Medical Collection with its professional advantages in the field of photocopying and publishing of ancient books.
"Participating in it is a rare historical opportunity in life." The words of Zhou Heping, deputy director of the first planning committee of Chinese Medical Collection, revealed the true feelings of scholars. In the compilation team, it is the duty to take responsibility for Chinese Medical Collection, and it is the consensus to "give up who I am"!
The essence of the extraction is in the Yuan Dynasty.
May 15th, 2023, Zezhol Monastery, Dingqing County, Tibet. On the big case, there are Tibetan Bonism documents for experts in ancient books research, and the upper and lower splints of each envelop are exquisitely wrapped with leather straps, which seems to be telling its long history. Untie the ropes of the Four Medical Classics and read the heavy Vatican-bound manuscripts, the first thing that comes to your eye is the source of the title &hellip in "Xiang Xiong Yu"; … From this moment on, Saren Gao Wa, deputy curator and research librarian of the National Library of Ancient Books, never took his eyes off the manuscript. "Its writing style, fonts and the cultural atmosphere of Xiang Xiong filled in the book made me feel really excited. This should be the 18th-century manuscript, but its content comes from the period of Xiangxiong culture before the 7th century, which is far ahead of the Four Medical Classics, the core work of Tibetan medicine recognized by academic circles, and the Four Medical Classics should be the initial source of Tibetan medicine. "
Saren Gao Wa excitedly reported the new discovery back to Beijing at the first time. As the original Tibetan medical works under the framework of "Chinese Ancient Books Protection Plan", Four Medical Classics, a cultural relic of Xiangxiong, was included in the Chinese Medical Collection without any suspense with the approval of the Editorial Committee.
This search and presentation runs through the compilation of Chinese Medical Collection. Let "Chinese Medical Collection" be perfected and put into the actions of every participant.
The two core tasks, namely, extracting the essence, presenting the Yuan Dian and the ministerial classification, and introducing the Chinese Medical Collection, have effectively promoted the academic research and open sharing of resources of ancient Chinese medicine books. The research and compilation starts with the bibliographic survey, edition survey and literature survey of ancient books, comprehensively investigates the historical relics, academic materials and artistic representativeness of the documents, looks up the original books, goes deep into the specific contents of the books, compares and analyzes them, and includes classic works of traditional Chinese medicine, original and representative works of various disciplines, famous medical works of past dynasties, etc. The selected version strives for the best, and adopts the method of "editing" and "category" for integrated compilation. The Compilation Committee selected 2,289 kinds of important ancient books from the existing ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine, which were sorted and sorted by stages, and the abstracts were written. Through "distinguishing chapters and learning, examining the origin of mirrors", the "category order" of each category and the "abstract" of each document are formed, which can provide a rich literature basis for scientific research, provide systematic and convenient research data for culture, education and related industries, and provide valuable experience for clinical practice. Later scholars can also "seek books by category, study by books" and truly "people should keep their studies and learn to keep their books" The compilation of Chinese Medical Collection extends on this chain. Keywords Zizi infant, striving for perfection, careful and patient investigation and verification,Editors are walking on thin ice.
The "health volume" is about to go to press, and Li Hongtao, the editor-in-chief, is still looking for it online, for the sake of unforgettable memories. The first edition of Chinese Medical Collection, Health-preserving Volume, included the book Health-preserving Compilation. This book has 22 volumes, which was written by Zhou Shouzhong, a health-preserving expert in the Song Dynasty. The earliest surviving edition is the Qiantang Xieqi block-printed edition in the tenth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty. However, all the books in domestic libraries are incomplete volumes. Through field literature research, it is found that volumes 1-5 and 19-22 of this book are now in Bayannaoer Library, Inner Mongolia, and volumes 6-18 are in the Library of Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There are three identical seals on the end of the two volumes, namely "Fan Chengmo Seal", "Father and Son Xieyuan Gate’s Grandson Jinshi Family" and "Chen Haozhi Seal". On the first page of the preface of Bashi Library, there are also Zhu Wenyin’s "Book of the Jin Dynasty" and "Treasure of the Jin Dynasty", which shows that this book was originally collected by Zhu Yuanzhang’s son, the Jin Dynasty King Zhu, but later it was scattered due to some accidents. Regrettably, when the two books are about to be combined, the end of Volume 21 and Volume 22 are still missing. This time, Li Hongtao found the same collection in the East Asian Library of Princeton University in the United States, and the original missing two leaves of this wonderful book will eventually be completed!
Chen Zhi’s Book of Supporting the Aged and Offering Family Support in the Northern Song Dynasty is a famous health preserving masterpiece in the medical history of China. In the Yuan Dynasty, Zou Xuan (Jing Zhi Lao Ren) supplemented the second, third and fourth volumes and reprinted them. Because of its rich content and excellent collation, the original Book of Providing for the Aged and Caring for the Family in the Northern Song Dynasty was not circulated. With the wide spread of "New Book of Shouqin Pension", the book of providing for the aged and supporting the relatives published after the Ming Dynasty was once named "Shouqin Pension Book". Since then, three books have been published in parallel in the world, namely, the book of supporting the elderly and offering relatives, the book of supporting the elderly and the new book of supporting the elderly, and were included in the Siku Quanshu during the reign of Qing Qianlong. In the meantime, in 1472, when Chenghua Renchen was in Ming Dynasty, Liu Yu, who was then a scholar in Shanxi’s official department, renamed Chen Zhi’s book on caring for the elderly in Song Dynasty, Zou Xuan’s new book on caring for the elderly in Yuan Dynasty and Lou Zizhen’s book on caring for the young in Ming Dynasty, and published them as a collection of books on caring for the elderly. This book is so easy to add and delete, but its old and young minds do not change, which shows that Confucianism runs through one vein. "Health Volume" selects two books, namely, A New Book of Longevity, Parenting for the Aged and Caring for the Young. Although some contents are duplicated, they belong to different inheritance systems and have important collating value. The Gezhi Series was not selected for engraving in Hu Wenhuan’s Wen Hall of Hulin in the 31st year of Wanli, because the book department compiled a duplicate edition in the New Book of Shouqin Pension, so it is no different from the Book of Pension and Parenting in the Handed-up Book for the Elderly, so it was abandoned this time.
A Chinese Medical Collection is surging with the positive pulse of Chinese medicine, and the subject system, academic system and discourse system of traditional Chinese medicine with China characteristics, China style and China style are on the paper, paving a new world for the innovation and development of traditional Chinese medicine in the future. Yu Ying ‘ao, a master of traditional Chinese medicine, spoke highly of Chinese Medical Collection: "It is the greatest value of ancient medical books to apply the experience and wisdom of the ancients flexibly to solve current practical problems. It is helpful to stimulate the vitality and potential of ancient Chinese medicine books and provide important support for promoting scientific and technological innovation by systematically sorting out and excavating the treasure house of ancient Chinese medicine books through the Chinese Medical Collection. Promoting the compilation of "Chinese Medical Collection" will help to inherit the unified context of traditional Chinese medicine, determine the academic origin of traditional Chinese medicine, explore the wisdom of life sciences in the East, and highlight the glory of Chinese medical civilization. " Zhang Boli, chairman of the Editorial Committee of Chinese Medical Collection, hopes that more achievements of Chinese Medical Collection will be released as soon as possible, and the spiritual identity of Chinese excellent traditional culture and the cultural essence with contemporary value and world significance will be refined and displayed. Protect, excavate and make good use of the great treasure house created by Chinese medicine, and promote the inheritance, innovation and development of Chinese medicine. "
I will ride the wind and break the heavy waves some day, and then set the cloudlike sail and cross the sea. The results of the excavation and collation of Chinese medical classics will surely exert a far-reaching influence on a strong cultural country and a healthy China, and will surely shine brilliantly again in the course of human life science.
We look forward to it.
