BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) According to the Macao Daily, the first smuggling case occurred on the 21st at the Hengqin Campus of the University of Macau, which was officially handed over to Macau last month. Four men from Guangdong and Henan tried to cross the wall of the Hengqin Campus of the University of Australia in the early morning and were intercepted by the public security frontier armed police. Four people claimed to have smuggled into Macao for the purpose of working as illegal workers. At present, four people are under further investigation for suspected smuggling.
Wandering fence is monitored
In the early morning of the 21st, the armed police of Guangdong Public Security Frontier Fifth Detachment stationed at the border of Zhuhai and Macao intercepted four men suspected of smuggling around the Hengqin Campus of the University of Macau. This is the first suspected smuggling case seized by Guangdong Frontier Defence Team No.5 after the Hengqin Campus of the University of Australia was handed over to the Macao Special Administrative Region Government for management on July 20. At 2 o’clock in the morning, the public security frontier guard found through the infrared monitoring system that four men appeared around the Hengqin campus of the University of Macau, and four people wandered outside the campus wall, looking around from time to time and acting suspiciously. The frontier armed police immediately rushed to the area and arrested four men who were trying to cross the wall and enter the campus of the Australian University.
After preliminary examination, four suspected stowaways were from Guangdong, Henan and other places, aged between 20 and 40, claiming to sneak into Australia to work as illegal workers.
Frontier defense management near campus
Guangdong Frontier Defense Team 5 said that after the Hengqin Campus of the University of Australia was officially handed over to the Macao Special Administrative Region government for management, Guangdong frontier defense management was moved to the periphery of the campus. In accordance with the mode of "observation on the spot, patrol monitoring and mobile disposal", the detachment carried out border control around the Hengqin campus of the University of Australia, built and improved facilities such as monitoring, lighting, audio warning and alarm, and strengthened the crackdown on illegal immigration activities.
Hengqin, facing the reclamation area and the road ring across the water, is less than 100 meters away from the nearest place, and has been a smuggling black spot on the Zhuhai-Macao border for many years. During the construction of the Hengqin Campus of the University of Australia, smuggling activities were quite active, and some mainland stowaways wanted to "fish in troubled waters" and sneak into Macao during the excavation of the river tunnel. According to statistics, since the construction of the Dahedi Tunnel Project in Australia started at the beginning of this year, the frontier armed police have seized 68 cases of smuggling with a total of 117 people. According to mainland laws, the first-time stowaway is punished by administrative detention for five days, while the second-time stowaway or stowaway with serious circumstances constitutes a criminal offence, and can be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than one year, criminal detention or control, and fined.
Anti-smuggling adds pressure
After the opening of the Hengqin Campus of the University of Australia, the Zhuhai-Macao border line, which was originally bounded by the river, extends into hengqin island. The north, west and south sides of the campus are separated by walls and ditches. The buffer zone on the front line of the border is narrower than before, so stowaways can go to Macau without wading, as long as they "climb over the wall", which may add pressure to the anti-smuggling work on the front line of border defense.
